Earth & Environmentally Oriented Arts
During the 1970’s, a new type of art was introduced. Earth art, or land art, as some people call it,
is a type of art that uses real materials from nature, in paintings.
With earth art, only natural materials are used to create an image. Rocks, sticks, and soil are the
most commonly used materials. One of the best-known artists that painted using earth art was Robert Smithson.
His most famous piece was “Spiral Jetty”. He used algae, rocks, and soil. With this piece, he actually
covered the painting with water several times to create a sense of the ocean washing up on the rocks.
By using real materials like rocks, algae, and soil, earth art gives a feeling that you are at the location
of the image in the painting. Earth art is amazing because it gives a sense of reality to the viewer of the painting.
